Notehelfer, F. G. American Samurai: Captain L. L. Janes and Japan. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 1985. 386 pp. Hardcover in dustjacket. Publisher's label inside front cover; minor smudging to edges of text block. Jacket spine is faded & a bit smudged; wear & creasing to extremities of jacket. Very good copy overall. Janes, a West Point graduate and Civil War veteran, was hired by a Japanese feudal lord "to prepare young samurai for a new era." Janes added Christian proselytizing to his mission, which was not only against his employer's wishes but also set him at odds with the mainstream missionary community. One of the few Westerners allowed to live in the interior, Janes became known as the "father" of the Kumamoto Band (which became the dominant wing of Japanese Protestantism). A fascinating portrait of this complicated man. The film "The Last Samurai" appears to have been (very) loosely based on Janes' adventures. $60.00
