Anna Maria Fay, a member of the distinguished Fay family of Cambridge, Massachusetts, "was welcomed and entertained by the aristocratic families of Shropshire." Her accounts of a dinner party at Oakly Park and a carriage ride to Downton Castle, for example, are lively and entertaining. She also notes the coming of the railway to Ludlow and, in general, provides a fascinating look at Shropshire life in the early 1850s.
