Starting Early

Welcome to Meetinghouse Books, a 19th century chapel now enjoying a second life as an old-fashioned used bookstore. Here Judith Tingley and Ken Haverly keep an eclectic inventory of over 25,000 interesting used books in many categories, including world history, literature & literary criticism, cultural studies, fine arts, performing arts, natural history, and more -- including a growing collection of fine vintage prints.

Owner Judith Tingley has been a bookseller for over twenty years. She served an apprenticeship in bookstores in Chicago and Boston before opening Zembla Books in Davis Square in Somerville, MA. She and Ken spent many happy years in Somerville and a few more in Wellesley at the Blue Moon Bookshop before deciding that the time had come to stop renting shop spaces and to start looking for a place of their own where they could settle in to live, work, and continue to grow.

When they discovered this fine old chapel in 1996, they knew they had found the right place. The town of South Deerfield is in the heart of the beautiful Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts, just down the road from Historic Deerfield and Mt. Sugarloaf, and only a few miles away from the lively towns of Amherst and Northampton.

This area is home to a diverse community of interesting people -- writers, musicians, agricultural workers,
entrepreneurs, artisans, activists, and academics -- all of whom contribute to the Valley's distinctive mix of
hometown friendliness and cultural sophistication. And it's a great place for books!

Art Room At Meetinghouse Books we try to fill our shop with the most interesting, unusual, and worthwhile books we can find, and offer booksfor every budget. We do not subscribe to the notion that a book's value lies solely in its price-tag. We do believe in the real importance of owning good books and take great satisfaction in helping customers to build their own collections. The shop is also open for walk-in business five days a week, and we'd be delighted to have you visit in person. After all, there's nothing like poking around in a real used bookshop!
Cat Patrol Shop hours are Wednesday - Friday 10-6 and Saturday - Sunday 12-6 (it's best to call ahead during January and February). Appointments can be made for other times and the store is also frequently open by chance (if you see the flag flying out front, please stop in!). Directions and map can be found here.
